It's a story with a happy ending, but a cruel beginning. Brownie, a four-year-old cat from Indiana, is recovering after being shot in the head with an arrow, reports the (Bloomington, Indiana) Herald-Times.

Brownie's tale began last week, when the missing outdoor cat turned up with a 13-inch-long plastic arrow lodged inside his head. His 83-year-old owner, Dillon Eads, was horrified. "It just broke my heart," a teary-eyed Eads told Fox 59 News in Indianapolis.

The arrow had entered Brownie's head just above his right eye and emerged near his left ear. Amazingly, it pierced only the skin and muscle, just missing his skull and brain. The wounds were infected, and vets estimated the arrow had been stuck inside the feline's head for three days, reports People Pets.

Surgery to remove the arrow went off without a hitch. "He is doing really well and is on the road to recovery," Sarah Hayes, CEO of the Monroe County Humane Society caring for Brownie, told Paw Nation. (Video of his recovery is above.)

So far, no one knows who shot the orange kitty, but the Monroe County Human Association (MCHA) is hoping to change that. The group paid for Brownie's surgery and is now offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of his attacker, according to information posted on the MCHA website. The group initially offered a $500 reward, but as news of Brownie's cruel attack spread, angered citizens around the country have donated money to the cause. "The reward is now up to $1,450 and growing," Hayes told Paw Nation. "Tips have been called in and authorities are following up on all of them."

Brownie is recovering happily in the home of Rebecca Brown, a Monroe County animal control officer who has been caring for the cat since his surgery. The lucky kitty is expected to return home to Eads in the next few days.

Meanwhile, Brownie had become a celebrity. He's even scheduled to appear on the Today Show this Saturday, says the Herald-Times.

No doubt Brownie would have been better off without this claim to fame, but some good may come of this cruel story. "Brownie is a very lucky cat that will survive, but we should remember that these types of abuses and worse, happen to animals across our country everyday" Hayes informed Paw Nation. "Supporting humane legislation on the state and federal level and speaking out about these issues is critical to putting a stop to all types of animal cruelty. "

i just dont get some idiots, thats sad, i love all animals now i know the reason i love animals more then humans,,

In our city in northern NY poor people have to leave their animals when they rent places with "no pets, no smoking, etc." Most of these people are clean and love their cats. In one particular apartment dwelling cats freeze to death, because they have no shelter. We try to rescue as many as we can, but most loose their skin, their ears, their lungs, and die as the cold air freezes them as many people watch. There are just not enough rescue places for cats. They should make renting with "no pets" a thing of the past. People should just have to pay fair a pet deposit.

Omg!! How can anyone do this to an innocent cat/animals? Good to hear they got the arrow out of Brownies head and that he will be alright in the future.

I hope they catch the idiot!!

Such cruelty shouldn't be tolerated.

Winsyrstrife#4 Winsyrstrife9-06-2009 @ 2:07PM

While I certainly understand your sentiment, we have to keep our perspective. How much would we love animals if they were capable of the same behavior as humans? Humans aren't really given a fair shake when you compare them to animals. Let's be honest...

With that said, there are definitely many humans that could arguably be said to be are far below the worth of animal. Like the ones who did this, for example.

Steven#5 Steven9-07-2009 @ 3:23PM

Yes but you have to realize that's why this so sick. These animals AREN'T capable of the same things we are. Most animals will love their owner unconditionally, and they do no harm, and these sick people harm and abuse them anyway. It's just not right.
And as far as what animals do to each other, that's natural instinct. What these people have done to this cat was purely for their own sick amusement.

Les#6 Les9-08-2009 @ 5:28PM

Sick individuals start with cruelty to animals and progress to crimes against Humans. There is your perspective!

Moira#7 Moira9-08-2009 @ 7:17PM

Yes!!! Many people are absolutely worthless when compared to animals, and I despise them in a very deep and awful way. I'm going to be very picky about whom I date or marry, because he will have to be able to treat my cats with respect.

Carly Lynn#8 Carly Lynn9-08-2009 @ 7:25PM

i'll tell you why love animals more than humans, because i for one certainly do. animals, unlike humans, in almost ALL situations, have absolutely no control of their situation. maybe if you saw some (more) of the sick things that people do to animals, as in what happened to this cat, you wouldn't be so quick. dogs, cats, and every living creature on this planet, and whoever is sick enough to do something like this only do it because they can; they aren't brave enough to take up somebody their own size. that cat was defenseless against somebody aiming a bow and arrow at his head. but the sick **** who did it sure knew what he (or she) was doing. there's your difference. humans, unlike animals, have a conscious ability to determine their own outcome. i'm pullin for the little guy (i.e. the innocent cats and dogs). tougher legislation would be great, but it's also pathetic that we live in a country that doesn't offer justice for the people who commit crimes like this against PEOPLE and ANIMALS. too bad we live in a world where you can rape kids, murder other people, torture animals, and get a slap on the wrist. what a kick in the pants to EVERY man and woman who has fought for this country.

Winsyrstrife#9 Winsyrstrife9-08-2009 @ 7:30PM

"Sick individuals start with cruelty to animals and progress to crimes against Humans."

Can't argue with the statistics. Is this, however, a guaranteed progression?

Winsyrstrife#10 Winsyrstrife9-08-2009 @ 7:47PM

Carly Lynn,

I have seen the horrible things that humans can do to animals. I have an uncle who used to work with the SPCA. I don't want to discuss the things he experienced, as there is just nothing good that can come of it, but there was one incident I can recall, which happened in our home.

My family had a German Shepherd mix that was like a second mother to me, while I was growing up. Someone threw a box of kittens over the fence, I guess expecting our dog to rip them to shreds. Much to their surprise, our dog (Maxi) pretty much adopted them, and they slept with her every night. We kept them as long as we could, until one of our aunts (severe allergies) couldn't take it anymore, and we gave them up for adoption.

Humans do horrible things, and when it's animals, I feel much pain inside, my eyes tear up sometimes, such a lack of empathy for a pretty much helpless creature. However, with that considered, and respect to your views, I stand by my initial statements.

wtf wtf WTF! only someone retarded and suicidal will do tht. if i found out how would he feel if someone shot him in the head with a arrow?!?!? huh?!?!?

carol#12 carol9-11-2009 @ 6:47PM

I think the people who hurt animals should have the same thing done to them as the poor animal, i bet there would be less cruelty then.

Mick Gillman#13 Mick Gillman9-06-2009 @ 5:25PM

I am glad that the spoiled furball catface survived his ordeal, I hate to see cats injured. I have one myself, an orage tabby. they are a tenacious breed. Who ever did that, I would like to see him/her like that and how they would like it. I'm happy the furball survived

JEFF#14 JEFF9-07-2009 @ 2:23PM

Man I dont even like cats and that makes ME angry !!!! I hope they catch the would be Robin Hood

Boz#15 Boz9-07-2009 @ 2:30PM

Another Michael Vick is on the loose!

Kitten#16 Kitten9-07-2009 @ 3:02PM

I have several cats and a couple of dogs. Heck I even take care of a couple of stray cats. The two strays are not adoptable to live inside. Trust me I tried and even I couldn't do it and I have a real thing for cats. I got them fixed, got them their shots and they love me (only my family) to death. They help keep the mice and rats out in the woods under control. Anyways, back to the story. I would love to hurt the cruel person who did this. IF and WHEN they find the person they probably won't do any jail time but whoever done this needs to be keep and eye on. If they can do something like this to an animal what will they do next? So glad Brownie will be okay!! I have one who looks almost like him named Cheezit.

kaet#17 kaet9-07-2009 @ 3:12PM

The plastic arrow is probably part of a child’s set. Adults who torture and maim other human beings usually start when young by hurting animals. I hope they catch the kid who did this before he shoots an arrow into another child and catch his idiot parents.

Carol#18 Carol9-08-2009 @ 7:39PM

Actually, I doubt it. A child's bow and arrow would likely have suctin cups on the tip of the arrow. The arrow wouldn't be that long, either. That came from a full-sized archery set. The sick person who did this was old enough to know what he was doing. I'm just glad the cat survived. BTW, I not only own two cats but a 50 lb. long bow and arrows--and neither the twain shall meet!

Stuffy1#19 Stuffy19-07-2009 @ 4:09PM

Forget the reward. Just let me beat the crap out of the a-hole that shot the cat. THAT would be my reward...

mag1963#20 mag19639-08-2009 @ 3:45PM

Amen to that! I would help you!
